A sharp chainsaw chain is vital for safe, efficient cutting. A dull chain requires more effort, causes fatigue, and increases the chance of accidents. It also puts more strain on the saw and bar. A properly sharpened chain makes clean, precise cuts and extends the working life of your equipment.
How often should you sharpen?
Traditionally, you’d sharpen after every tank of petrol. With modern battery saws, consider sharpening after each full charge. A quick file touch-up can keep you going between professional sharpenings.
•Produces sawdust instead of chips
•Needs more pressure to cut
•Cutting edge appears shiny or rounded
•Cut wood looks ragged or frayed
✅ Cuts faster and with less effort
✅ Provides better control, reducing kickback
✅ Lowers strain on your saw’s engine and bar
✅ Delivers clean, smooth cuts with less damage to the wood

Tree roots and the soil around a tree’s base often contain grit and debris. Even a single contact can quickly blunt or damage your chain. Staying about 1–2 feet above ground level helps protect your chain.

Rocks or stones can instantly ruin a chain’s sharpness, similar to contact with a grinding disc. Repairs may require restoring the chain’s factory angles and profiles.
Always buck your logs raised from the ground - one touch wil dull the chain

Bark filled with embedded sand and earth acts like sandpaper. Cutting through gnarled or dirty bark quickly dulls your chain, meaning more frequent sharpening will be needed.

Trees sometimes hide nails or staples from old fencing. Striking metal causes serious chain damage. Many users carry a metal detector to check. Pallets and fence posts can also hide nails, so take care and consider professional sharpening if you hit metal.
Some skilled operators sharpen chains in the field after every fuel fill or battery charge, often carrying spare chains to swap over and sharpen later. Manual sharpening with a round file and guide is practical for occasional users, but it takes time and patience.
Professional operators with many chains typically swap chains and have the blunt ones professionally resharpened. At Certified Sharpeners, we use an Oregon industrial chain grinder, restoring factory angles and profiles to maintain peak performance and prolong the life of your chains.
