At our Shropshire workshop we offer a true professional wood chisel sharpening service, undertaking work from local clients and offer a same day turnaround by post for the whole of the UK. We reset, restore and regrind the chisel cutting edge to precise angles, repairing damage to chisels can save huge amounts of time and thence money. Using precision machinery supplied by chisel maker Robert Sorby we restore them to a factory perfect angles and all the chisels we sharpen are honed not just ground, sharper than the one first used from the factory. We flatten the backs for a small charge and along with the accurate bevels and a keen, durable finish you have a tool that will be a joy to use. We charge by the width of the chisel and if there’s significant damage we add a small surcharge. we offer a back flattenign service for the cabinet makers and other high precision users. We price the back flattening as an addition as many users of wood chisels do not need such high levels of finish.

Sharpeners do?
Assess & true: Check flatness, remove dubbing, correct bellied edges
Grind to angle: Typical primary 25° with optional 30° micro-bevel (or your spec)
Polish & deburr: Fine polished finish for longer-lasting sharpness
Damage repair: Chips, mushroomed tips, uneven bevels, heat damage
Precision & Repeatability Matters
Using the wet wheel Tormek T8, or more our Sorby Pro Sharp (seen here) we can put almost any angle of grind on the edge of almost any chisel, plane iron or planer blade, large or small. Hollow ground from the Tormek or flat finish from the Sorby Pro
Typically the cutting edge is sharpened and honed to 30° and the supporting grind is 25° but we can furnish several angles from the presets on the machines.
Hard Woods tend to be 30°-35° offering sufficeint robustness, soft wood only we can offer 20° grind with a 25° hone
Plane Irons Too
At our workshop a few miles north of Shrewsbury we sharpen on a water cooled Tormek T8 equipped with a dedicated plane iron jig, this is instrumental in achieving absolute precision and ensures edge straightness on plane irons. We apply the same process to plane irons as we do to chisels, reapiring damage, grinding to provide accurate bevels, creating flat backs on our flat hone machine, giving crisp edges honed to a high polish for tear-free planing.
Sharpening Turnaround
Fastest service is to local drop-off at our Bomere Heath workshop, or if too distant why not use our UK-wide postal service. Most jobs turned around promptly - within 24 hours; we will advise if heavy repair is needed with an expected shipping date.

Back flattening
If you wish, and we normally do, we can flatten the back of your chisel or plane iron to a high standard, this will produce a sharper edge right along the width of the tool. We have a flat hone— a spinning disc we can control, similar to a surface grinder, but nowhere near as aggressive. Using several grades of grit, we work the back down to flatness of a very high degree and finish hone. and polish

How long does chisel sharpening take?
Most jobs are turned around within a few days. Heavy damage or large batches may take longer, but we’ll confirm timescales when you book.Can you repair badly damaged chisels?
Yes. We can regrind chipped, rounded, or mushroomed edges, and restore correct bevel geometry, within the limits of the steel.Will you flatten and polish the back of my chisel?
