Sending Knives by Post – What You Need to Know
Open-bladed knives (such as kitchen knives) are usually restricted by most carriers, they will likely refuse them.
However, The Post Office will accept them if properly packaged to prevent any risk to staff.
The Post Office guidance states:
“Sharp objects. (Excludes: (i) knives prohibited under UK law – see Weapons – and (ii) Bladed items) ‘Not kitchen knives or legal penknives’.”**
We are not permitted to sharpen items for anyone under 18, or any item classed as a weapon under the Offensive Weapons Act 2019.
Closed penknives typically present no problems when correctly packed.

Packing Advice for Specific Items
These common items don’t require specialist packing, but still need care:
•Wood chisels – Protect the edge with card or use a tool roll.
•Woodturning tools – Wrap the tip with extra card.
•Chipper blades – Wrap in card and tape tightly.
•Scissors (hair, grooming, tailoring, Kevlar) – Protect tips with folded card.
•Dagging shears – Tape closed.
•Garden tools – Chains, secateurs etc. — tape closed, then pad.
•Clippers (horse, cattle etc.) – Bubble wrap or box is fine.
